April Newsletter & Minutes

Clayton Federated Women’s Club
General Meeting April 9, 2009


The meeting was called to order at 11:40. Lita led us in prayer; Dawn Lacy led the Club Collect and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Angela Safranik and Jo Beth Vigil-Price were introduced as guests.

Deputy Sheriff Mike Shumate of Clayton gave a very informative presentation on awareness of drug activity in our community. Thomas Benadidas, the District Attorney, and Sheriff Bill Spriggs accompanied him and added to his program. We were very grateful to have them come and speak.

Jamie Blanks asked if there were any corrections to the minutes. Jamie made a motion to approve minutes and Carol Childress second motion. Minutes for March meeting were approved.


Sue Richardson gave the treasurer’s report which indicated that we had a balance on hand at the March meeting of $3,281.54. Deposits of $0 were made and disbursements of $28.00 were made leaving a new balance of $3,253.54. Sue mentioned that bag money was starting to come in.

Sue Richardson informed us of Wanda Hughes’ passing and asked what the club wanted to do to in tribute to her. Edith Lois made a motion to donate $25.00 to the Cemetery and Ruth Lawrence second the motion. We took a collection to donate to the Senior Citizens. Pat Chavez Made a motion to permanently name one of the Scholarships after her. Carol Childress second the motion.
Cleo, Pear, and Pat are going to interview girls on Tues. April 14 for the scholarship.


Jamie Blanks reported that the bags had come in and members could pick up preordered bags or buy bags after the meeting. The bags would also be for sale at the grocery store and at each general meeting.


Pat Chavez gave a report on the District Convention. We will use busses to transport ladies to the banquet. Decoration ideas have been discussed. The menu has been planned and bids are going out for the catering. We are also looking for musicians to perform at the banquet.


Karan Brower wants to remind ladies to bring their teapots to the museum on April 17th and 18th for the Tea Party on April 19th. Also, ladies that signed up to make the tea need to be there on the 19th.


Karan Brower told us of the pottery projects that the art club did last week. Everyone that went needs to get with Karan about when to come in and finish. There won’t be a set time so you will need to set up an appointment.


Jamie Blanks discussed the Civic Group meeting. Deputy Sheriff Shumate came and spoke about the drug activity in Clayton and things that needed to be done to help. We agreed to help get the Crime Stoppers and perhaps a Neighborhood Watch program in place. She also reminded us that the Manna Food Box orders needed to be in on Friday April 10th.


Edith Lois Priest told us about the updates the Library had. Laptops have been donated and an ESL DVD program has been acquired so that the Library can offer ESL classes. The library is also having a Houdini Program which will be held at the museum on April 17th at 7pm. It will be free to attend.


Sue Richardson told us that the Chamber Banquet had been a wonderful success! The speaker had been quite eloquent and the awards ceremony had been exciting. She encouraged us to go next year. No events are scheduled until the Fourth of July.


Edith Lois Priest told us that the museum had hired a new director, Victoria Baker, who is also a new member of the CFWC! She also reminded us of the upcoming Tea Party and tickets have been sold out!
Karan Brower handed out Health Fair Volunteer Schedules and reminded everyone who had signed up to be there.


State Convention has requested that each FWC member buy or sell a $25.00 raffle ticket and each club needed to bring with them 2 gift-wrapped door prizes. Jamie Blanks volunteered to take care of the door prizes. Also, members that need to take their art to State need to get with Karan and fill out paperwork and give her their art.
